Introduction to Hockey

Program Overview

MYHA's Intro to Hockey program will focus on learning to skate with certified coaches. The program aims to help kids learn to skate while introducing some basic skating drills and incorporating sticks and pucks into drills later in the season. At the end of this program, participants will be able to play hockey at the Mite level. This program will work specifically on learning to skate and is designed for skaters new to the hockey program. Birth years 2016 - 2021. Upon completion of Intro to Hockey Season 1, skaters will have the option to continue with hockey by either completing Intro to Hockey Season 2 or joining the Mite program. USA Hockey evaluations will be used to guide the skaters' advancement.

Location

• All sessions will be at the Smith Center.

Equipment

• All basic equipment needs; including ice skates, helmets, chest pads, elbow pads, gloves, breezers, and knee pads/shin guards, are provided by the Merrill Youth Hockey Association to check out during each session.
• A deposit ($50 check/cash) is required and refunded after the equipment is returned at the end of the session.
• Beginning August 1, 2024, USA Hockey requires Neck Laceration Protector for all levels of play EXCEPT Learn to skate/intro to hockey.

This is the second portion of MYHA Intro to Hockey program and will continue to build on basic skating drills, as well as, incorporating stick and puck drills. At the end of this program skaters will participate in the Charlie Phelps Memorial Jamboree hosted by MYHA.

Merrill Youth Hockey Fee: Free+ USA Hockey Fee

USA Hockey Fees vary depending on age.

• Registration with USA Hockey is required to participate in hockey activities.
• The USA Hockey fee is paid once per season.
